On February 12, 2022, Matthew and his best friend, Kevin MacDonald, were struck head-on by an impaired driver. Matthew was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital where he used his incredible strength and mental willpower to fight for his life for four long weeks. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on March 10, 2022. The Matthew Dennison Charitable Foundation (“MD16”) continues his legacy by promoting student athletics, leadership, education, and community outreach.
"Matthew Dennison was the 2021-2022 West Warwick/Exeter West Greenwich Captain. He was a four-year varsity athlete who helped his team win the Rhode Island Boys Division 3 Championship in 2020 and 2nd place in 2019. Matthew was the strongest athlete on the team, not only in physical strength but also in mental willpower.
Matthew was a true leader on and off the ice who surrounded himself with great friends, whom he treasured. Matthew was a mentor to the underclassman; they all looked up to him and wanted to emulate him.
Matthew's jersey number 16 will be retired and hung from the rafters in the West Warwick Ice Rink as a representation of Matthew's hard work and dedication but most importantly to always remind players to never stop fighting."
